What to do when the lock is stuck
Hi readers, how are you? I'm the Raul of the South Zone 24h!
It is not uncommon to get into a situation where we need to open a lock, but it
does not unlock. This can happen because the lock is jammed or because we have
lost the key, as in the case of gates that have long been closed.
Well, there are two simple solutions to this problem. The
first is to try to lubricate the padlock so that it finally opens with the key
and the other is the break-in. Generally, a lock in these situations will
hardly be reused, so breaking the lock may be a good option.
Without further ado, let's explore what the options are for
when the padlock is stuck.
How to open a lock that is jamming
When you notice that a padlock is jammed and stubborn in not
opening, do not try to force the key to turn. It can end up breaking and making the repair even more complicated.
Remove the key and try to find something that can help unlock the locking
system.
Burned oil or specific lubricants (such as the WD-40 and
White Lub) are excellent options. Try to place the lubricant inside the keyhole
and also in the hole next to the lock.
Gradually try to turn the key to try to open the lock. With
a little patience eventually the padlock might end up unlocking. However,
depending on the padlock situation it may be that it does not open, even with a
lot of lubrication.
This is especially true with the padlocks that have been
exposed to rain for a long time and are well oxidized. For these, the solution
is to pop the padlock.
One easy way to do this is with the use of two wrenches.
Simply place each key into one part of the locking loop so that it creates two
levers.
Force the two keys against each other and eventually the
side of the padlock will give way. It is worth noting that this procedure will
not work on very thick padlocks. For these cases, it is worth trying a slitter
and a sledgehammer.
